Review of JCVD (2008) by Alex W — 15 Jul 2009
There are scenes (one in particular) where Van Damme emerges as an actor and not a crap action movie star. The soliloquy is a little manipulative but the delivery, writing, and staging, are so devastating that it almost makes up for all the horrible moments Van Damme has placed on film.
The story offers a unique look at just how different a movie star's life is from both their work and their public image. The opening sequence captures the difficulty, and the artistry, behind even the most generic action movies.
Most of all, including its flaws, JCVD ultimately feels like Van Damme's artistic (and in some ways personal) redemption.
