Review of JCVD (2008) by Rob M — 09 Jul 2010
It's not just any movie that can make me respect Jean-Claude Van Damme. In this nifty little thriller, Van Damme plays himself ? an aging action star whose best days are long behind him. Wiped out financially in a child-custody hearing, Van Damme goes to a bank in his native Brussels to withdraw some cash, only to find himself caught up in the action when robbers strike the bank and take him as a hostage.
The movie plays with the audience's perception of Van Damme the actor, and has a sly bit of fun in portraying "Jean-Claude Van Damme," the character, as a bit of a coward. The movie cuts back and forth in time, showing the circumstances that led Van Damme to the bank, and also throws in some criticism of the police and the media, for good measure. This was the right kind of movie for Van Damme to make at this point in his career, and I'd be willing to watch more from him if he'd continue to take these chances.
