Review of JCVD (2008) by Bryan G — 26 Jan 2011
It was Dr. Ferdie Pacheco (Ali's cutman) who pointed out that there's a kwirk in American hero worship; that it's not until our hero is humbled once or twice that we let him in. There's some truth to that. I didn't like Britney Spears until she got out of rehab and Van Damme was just too Hollywood until I saw JCVD. The Muscles from Brussels delivers a monologue that's right up there with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men "You want me on that wall...!" and Al Pacino in the Godfather Part III "Just give me another chance and I will sin no more." Two-thirds into this movie Van Damme opens up like a sob: drugs, wives, "Oss!", fame.... BRAVO, YOU MADE A FAN! The story itself is told in that awkward European style. Time isn't a fixed construct so they've got you hopping back and forth. It all works. Two thumbs up!
"It's hard for me to judge people...and it's hard for them to not judge me. Easier to blame me. Yeah, something like that." - JC.
