Review of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) by Madeleine M — 29 Jun 2011
I thought with having seen all the previous Smith films, going back to watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (which I originally watched only having seen Clerks and Dogma) would be more enjoyable since I was at some point led to believe there were many things I was missing out on not having seen Mallrats (well, I had seen a bit here and there on TV) and Chasing Amy.
Granted, it's been a long time since I watched this the first time and I barely remembered it - while watching I started remembering more and more. What I gained from having seen mallrats and Chasing Amy was very very little. I knew about Jason Lee's character form Mallrats already and his character from Chsaing Amy was very easy to look up - and regardless, Banky or however you spell it wasn't funny due to nods at Chasing Amy. His jokes didn't rely on anything that wasn't bluntly (pun) told to you in Strike Back. Brodie was practically the same as well.
Really, the only new jokes I got were at the very end when they come out of the movie and the other Chasing Amy characters make cameos.
Everything else - same fucking movie with the same dick and fart jokes.
I might even say I like it less on a second viewing (might. I think Matt Damon and Ben Afflecks Good will Hunting 2 scene is brilliant.) cause it's even more obvious how much of a hypocritical dick Kevin Smith is.
I've heard him and read him complain/whine about the Magnolia incident many times, even after this film came out, and he accused Magnolia fans of being childish assholes who don't let him state his opinion (that was offensive and flame-baiting to begin with) without them "attacking" him - or conversely, defending themselves and their taste and expressing their opinion - a right Smith wants only for himself?
So here's a guy who made a forum post years ago bashing a film in a very insulting-to-fans and just overly insulting in general (you can hate a movie, state you hate it and not be a dick doing so) who then called people who responded negatively childish. Then this man makes a dick and fart joke movie where a large motivating factor (the motivating factor besides getting banned from their drug dealing spot) is people on the internet - most often the people are broken down into singling out one particular usre - Magnolia_fan. Then the movie ends with them flying around the world kicking anyone who spoke bad about them onine ass - ending with "Are you Magnolia_fan?" - "Yes." or something like that.
CHILDISH?!?! HE JUST SPENT MORE THAN A FEW DOLLARS TO WRITE A FILM THAT SPENDS MORE THAN ONE JOKE, (I got it the first time, Smith, you hate Magnolia and its fanbase for calling you out on your bullshit) INSULTING THESE PEOPLE fROM AN INTERNET FORUM WHO DISAGREED WITH HIM. YOU'RE A GODDAMN FILM MAKER, SPEND MORE TIME WRITING GOOD SCRIPTS THAN ON BEING A HYPOCRITICAL ASSHOLE.
