Review of Jaws 2 (1978) by Mareen K — 11 Jun 2011
This sequel was motivated by money and nothing else. Its approach is what is now the typical sequel formula: convince the star to come back (or in this case, force them into it by contract), show the monster more often and have more spectacular kills.
The movie boils down to a group of teenagers being terrorized by a persistent shark, which means there's adolescent banter and bikinis and nothing even close to the dialog and atmosphere you had in the first film.
Roy Scheider tries his best but his reluctance to reprise the role of Brody seems to almost shine through sometimes, he sometimes seems a little lost. He was right not be be happy about this. As entertaining as it might be if you just sit back and accept that it isn't going to be anything like the original Jaws, it is frustrating to see the material being milked for money and cheap thrills.
