Review of Jaws (1975) by Nbfc — 09 Jan 2018
The original Steven Spielberg killer shark movie that not only took a huge bite out of the box office but also established the modern Hollywood blockbuster business model as we know it today (simple high-concept action adventure flick released during the summer with heavy advertising).
Based on the 1974 novel of the same name and notorious for it’s troubled production history, the movie remains as effective as ever due to it’s adherence to the philosophy that “it’s what you don’t see that scares you”.
Spielberg’s minimalistic Hitchockian approach (mostly born out of necessity due to the fact that the mechanical shark barely worked), John Williams iconic score and the fantastic cast are key ingredients in elevating the campy B-movie premise into one of the most iconic movies ever made.
