Review of Jaws (1975) by Olivia G — 29 May 2017
That slow, looming bass riff that encompasses the theme of the movie has long since been the source of my hydrophobia ever since I was a kid. The ever-prevalent despair when some poor unfortunate and naive actor wanders into the water and you know what's coming, but there is nothing you can do about it. That is true horror-movie fear, and Jaws has plenty of that. Even viewing the long-shots of the boat just peacefully floating in the water promotes some level of anxiety in even the toughest movie viewer.
Much of the fear of the movie comes from the fact that you rarely ever actually wind up seeing the shark that is spoken of often throughout the film. It's right in front of your face practically the whole movie, but it is only seen at the very end of the film, This is a classic film tactic that is still used in horror movies, today. It mimics reality as well, as you will rarely see a shark before it takes a chomp out of you.
