Review of Jason Bourne (2016) by Brady L — 09 Oct 2017
Matt Damon IS Jason Bourne. No matter where they take this series, if at all, Damon either needs to be a character in the movie or referenced several times. Returning to the actor that started the whole thing after Jeremy Renner attempted to take the reigns.
Whether he has any more Bourne related movies in his future, Renner showed he doesn't have the same kind of charisma and acting chops that Damon has in this type of role. The film also has a more modernistic feel with it as they showcase social media being used to spy on people worldwide and also to control people in their everyday lives.
Showing Bourne in a more vulnerable state also worked for this film. Time has ravaged him and his mind continues to betray him with images and clips from his past. Learning more about his life before Treadstone and becoming Bourne allowed for fans to continue to piece together this massive puzzle that is Jason Bourne.
Losing Nicky relatively early on without being able to explore the relationship they reportedly had before they both joined the program was kind of a letdown as I was looking forward to this subplot really being explored and creating even more emotional ties for this character and the fans of these films.
Jason Bourne adds another chapter to this spy series that could continue well beyond the life span of Matt Damon.
