Review of Jarhead (2005) by Jon C — 05 Apr 2013
Sam Mendes makes a very thought-provoking inside look into the life of a marine soldier hard.
Jake Gyllenhall is phenomenal along with Jamie Foxx, Peter Sarsgard and a lot of other characters.
It's emotionally tolling and psychologically intoxicating.
The 'jarheads' feel like all they do is pick up the pieces during the war and are left out of the action but Mendes looks at the bigger picture of what the soldiers are fighting for their lives and amongst themselves.
The beginning is set up nicely, the middle really drags but the ending is very anti-climactic because it just goes straightforward from there.
This is a nice analyzation of a marine soldier's lifestyle; the weapons he's given, the discipline he recieves, how being disconnected from home takes its sweet toll and how his fellow comrades and he go on after the battle is won.
