Review of Japanese Story (2003) by Michelle . — 13 Jun 2004
I just watched Japanese Story. I'd heard about it several times before and thought it would be a high quality story, but I was not as amazed as I thought I'd be. The beginning of the movie went way too fast. Okay, they were stuck in the desert, got to know each other, fought a bit. But when they suddenly ended up in bed I was like - where the heck did they get close and flirtsy enough to suddenly end up having sex? The sex part was just quite unexpected after all the time they'd not really gotten along that well. And then the guy suddenly dies. Huh.
I thought it was quite weird. But they cared about the Japanese traditions and all that; that was the good part about the story. The cinematography was good, too, but it had flaws as soon as the actors were involved. I also felt the Japanese guy and the blonde woman didn't go very well together. I didn't feel like this was a nice couple to enjoy one another. But maybe they wanted to have that kind of very opposite people for these roles for exactly that reason.
I think, the movie seemed like all these people who made this movie were just beginners at what they were doing, but I don't know how long they've already worked in that business.
