Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Mloy X — 16 Sep 2011
I highly anticipated this newest adaptation of one of my favorite novels. On a positive note, the non-linear method of story-telling was certainly a refreshing and unique approach to relaying the events and the opening sequence seemed very promosing because it created an immidiate aura of mystery and a sense of concern for the a character who is seemingly in distressed and in midflight.
Unfortunately, it was really disappointing that so much of the other scenes in the film felt rushed and many of the exchanges between Mr. Rochester and Jane were either left out or completely altered in favor of too many shots of Jane milling about, in silent contemplation. Granted, there is always liberties taken with each interepretation of a story but much of what made the characters so endearing was Bronte's ability to put into.
Words why or how two seemingly opposite personalities could possibly fall for each other.
The ensemble was great and they all gave very credible performances, most notably Amelia Clarkson, who plays young Jane Eyre. Basically, the film was able to capture some of the essence of the book but not it's soul.
