Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Matt — 22 Nov 2008
Hallucinogenic pre-death fantasy... through most of the film the story moves seamlessly through what are apparently different periods of Jacob's life and it is not at all obvious what's real and what isn't.
The story builds slowly and effectively conveys the confusion and unreality of what is happening.
Sadly the ending, seeking to provide an 'answer' to the film does kind of kill the atmosphere. Fortunately the rest of the film is strong enough that it doesn't really matter.
Some great visual moments and solid performances from the cast make this an intriguing film that I somehow feel could have been great but just missed the mark...
