Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Chad H — 25 Feb 2013
I really enjoyed this film, it gave you one of those twist endings but here''s the warning now Spoilers may be present!
So it starts typically like any movie in the early 90's, were introduced to Jacob a guy that works in a mail room is a surviving Vietnam Veteran who suffered the same fate as everyone else who returned, cast aside from everyone. However weird things start happening to Jacob and he believes it was something caused from the war in which he was given experimental drugs that have just now begun to affect him. What makes this movie so great is its chilling atmosphere, you really get the feeling of paranoia after a while as well as a thirst for knowledge in terms of whats happening to Jacob, I really do not want to give to much away but I will compare this film to Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge in its story although...that may be a spoiler.. but this one is really good, its smooth and doesn't really detract from the main story. The plot itself is interesting enough to keep your attention as well as some nice scenes with some nudity and drug tripping. The drug trip scenes are really well done, they aren't to over the top, they aren't to subtle, they are just perfect. The character of Jacob really captures the essence of the Vietnam Vets, beaten down people who are trying to make it back and function in society while repressing horrible memories of what happened overseas. If you are a fan of trippy thrillers then this might be just what you're looking for I really do recommend this for any chiller/thriller fan.
