Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Matt C — 08 Apr 2018
Pretty good movie about a fascinating and rather disturbing subject, and the story it spawned for the main character. It was surprisingly easy for me to view this movie, considering its subject matter. Maybe because I already read a bunch of war stories, so I expect these things. Shoutout to "Johnny Got His Gun".
It was a interesting blend of genres, or at least you didn't really know what the genre even was till late in the movie. It's admirably effective in its imagery. The war scenes, the nightmarish hospital scene, the creatures.
In my opinion, the story took a little too much buildup time, and when it did reach its climax and reveal, it kind of flatlined. It did manage to get one more surprise at the end, which in retrospect made the entire movie much more poignant and brilliant.
The acting was serviceable, nothing TOO incredible. But it got the job done.
The fact that the movie managed to pull a neat trick near the very end really does put the entire movie in a different light, but the problems that exist prior to the final reveal still leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't a perfect experience.
Very intriguing and respectable movie overall. Well played.
