Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Giffy G — 28 Dec 2008

I don't understand why this movie and I didn't click. It had all the right inredients: a complicated narrative that was unfolded well in a non-chronological way that shied away from cliches, focused on character development, and kept you guessing what was reality and what was not.

Normally, I find these sorts of movies invigorating, but Jacob's Ladder felt empty. I did not connect to any of my main characters, and rather than being engaged by the non-linear narrative, I felt alienated by it.

I actually got bored while watching this movie. I think I'll give it a rewatch in the future, because when I sat down to explain why I didn't like the movie, I just kept listing its strengths, and I hate to invoke that hell-demon of "taste.
