Review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Margót C — 25 Mar 2014
This retelling of the classic "beanstalk" story has visually stunning scenery. That's about all it had going for it. The characters were a bit cheesy, which can be fun at times, but it happened much too often for my moviegoer critic taste. The opening sequence felt way too much like a poorly animated video game cut scene, which is what I mentioned to my husband, and he agreed. I would have much rather have seen some roughly sketched animated sepia tone storyboard scenes.
The storyline had decent substance which kept me mostly interested at first, but I found myself wanting the movie to end.
This movie lived up to its PG-13 rating, by not only having ugly, gruesome giants, but their actions towards the human race were not kid-friendly. I was sad to see irresponsible parents have their 5-10 year old children accompany them to the theatre. I do not recommend for children under 12.
