Review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Jesse M — 01 Jun 2015
A giant sized misfire. It had the cast, the crew, and the budget to pull off a fun fairy spectacle... but only one word sums up the final result... LACKLUSTER. Just about everything about this film was so uninspired, dull, and lifeless on screen from the cosplay level costumes to the humorless approach. The plot never took any interesting turns, and anytime you'd think something interesting was going to happen, the story would retreat back to mediocrity.
The problem isn't that it's a BAD movie per se, it isn't. It's just an absurdly average fantasy film that does nothing to stand out. The giants were the only thing the filmmakers did right thank God, but it matters not when they're surrounded by a wasted cast, a sleep inducing pace, and a whole lot of nothing going on. It is a chore to sit thru, and it's a 200 million dollar film that is creatively bankrupt. It also certainly implies what a hack director Bryan Singer has become.
