The story is fairly flat and there's A LOT of hokey looking visual effects, but the action is very entertaining and the direction is pure. Bryan Singer doesn't opt to aggressively dig his claws into the movie to find layers that aren't there.
But rather he lets the movie rest as a fun fantasy adventure and nothing more.
