Review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Alan H — 14 Dec 2013
I liked it far more than I expected to. Jack and the Beanstalk is a pretty flimsy framework to hold-up a lavish CGI spectacle. But there is a naïve sweetness to the proceedings that make it hard to dislike. And it is clear that the idea was to use what is virtually the only popular English fairy tale to engender a bit of old-fashioned Anglo pride; and what's wrong with that? The cast is uniformly good - but why give Hoult such a hideous.
Hairstyle? He can't be anything but beautiful, but the designers sure didn't lend him a hand. I loved the bit with the crown at the end...but what was the significance of the kid with the notebook, who smiles to reveal a gap-toothed grin? Was he supposed to be a descendant of one of the characters? If so, I missed it.
