Review of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) by Matt D — 09 Jul 2014
'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' is essentially the epitome of a film that is neither bad nor particularly great. It is exceptionally well-made, the script is feasible, the acting works (though Keira Knightley is obnoxious for the first act), and it moves along at a nice clip thanks to some on point direction from Kenneth Branagh.
But the movie never really soars in a way to make the viewer be anything close to excited about it. Despite the modern day gizmos and plot centered around economic war, this really is a film that could've easily been released in the late 80s or early 90s and considering the source material that probably makes a little sense. But even Ben Affleck's take on the character was loaded with more excitement and tension than what can be mustered up here.
In short, this is an exceptionally fine entertaining experience. I just don't think I'll remember it a week from now.
