Review of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) by K Nife C — 24 Oct 2016
This is truly brainless action schlock, and I was giggling the whole time at how weak the plot is. Having never seen the first film, I am highly doubtful that watching it before would have explained away any of this film's problems.
One glaring plot discrepancy stands out to me. *Spoilers* Reacher is named in a paternity suit by Samantha's mother (at Samantha's behest) before the events of the film. Because of this, Samantha gets embroiled in the action.
We come to find out near the end that neither Reacher nor Samantha's mother even recognize each other, therefore, he can't be Samantha's father. So how in the hell did Samantha's mother name Reacher in the paternity suit if they never met, and she doesn't even know who he his? I'm sure they just shoehorned Sam in as a foil for Reacher to show that he is ageing or softening or some sentimental crap.
Regardless of that character's unnecessary presence, that was just the biggest discrepancy amidst a sea of action cliches. There are no surprises here, and perhaps that's why it sucks so bad. Or it could be the completely flaccid gender dialogue that goes nowhere and says nothing.
If you want to see Tom Cruise punch and explode things, however, this is the turd for you. At the very least, it is more entertaining than "Jason Bourne".
