Review of Jack Goes Boating (2010) by Andrew S — 24 Jan 2011
Amy Ryan's is the anchor of this indie drama. Her and Philip Seymour Hoffman give extremely awkward but delightful performances as Jack and Connie. There so awkward at times it is absurdly funny and cute.
However their performances are the only appealing aspect of the film, more-so Amy's. The film fails to move past the conventions of its original stage play format. Most of the story and it's dramatic highs take place within John and Nancy's tiny apartment.
The disintegration of the two's marriage seems a bit forced and not a natural progression. However the budding romance between the other two is very much the opposite enjoyable and has natural tone to it.
Without the awkward romance this film would be all to forgettable.
