Review of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007) by Anders J — 16 Oct 2008
A refreshingly old school style (no CG!) and a distinctly Canadian charm, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is unfortunately bogged down in far too much story and not enough monster slaying action. With that said, director Jon Knautz does plan to continue Jack Brooks' adventures, with this serving as more of an origin story for the character.
Thankfully, the film does have a likable cast, with Trevor Matthews (also producing) as the rage-inclined Brooks and the great Robert Englund as Brooks night school science teacher. Englund, in particular, seems to be having an absolute blast with his role, and he really sells the Professor's hilariously grotesque (and long) transformation into an otherworldly demon spawn.
If Jack Brooks 2 piles on more creatures, action, and gore (which Knautz promises), it could very well be the Evil Dead 2 of this decade. Or, at the very least, the best horror sequel to come out of Canada.
