Review of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007) by Heath H — 19 Oct 2008
"Jack Brooks... I've seen Evil Dead. I love Evil Dead... and you, sir, are no Evil Dead. I just had to get that out of the way first because there seems to be a lot of fans making the comparison between those two movies.
Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer has been getting quite a cult following and as apparent on these review pages seems to have been received very well. I have no answer to how that possibly could have happened because this film is terrible.
The "plot" if you want to call it that involves a guy who's angry because when he was a kid his family was killed by a "monster" which in actuality looks like a mud covered Rastafarian.
And because he's so angry... I guess, he can fight monsters? And so when one (literally one) pops up at his night course.. he's ready to poorly punch his way to victory. Okay, there are so many problems with this film that there won't be enough room to list them all.
So, let's look at the top choices... one, the actor they choose to play the lead has all the charisma of an old shoe. Look at Bruce Campbell... he exudes likability. This guy does not and since the whole film is based around him.
.. the movie is doomed to fail. Even a winnging performance by Robert Englund can't seal up the hole in this wall. Secondly, the effects in this movie are laughable. I don't mean cheesy bad... I mean, bad-bad.
Honestly, the "monsters" look like they are castaways from some canceled Sid & Marty Krofft show. They're not scary. They're not funny. They're foam based abominations. Lastly, the script, direction, cinematography is all cookie cutter.
Not a single chance is taken and most of the time it's just too boring for words.".
