Review of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007) by Steve V — 06 Jan 2009
"Jack Brooks Monster Slayer" is the story of student and part time plumber with a serious anger problem who ends up going face to face with the forces of darkness. If you're a fan of movies like "Evil Dead" then I don't see any way that you won't like this one.
At no point does the film ever take itself too seriously. This is simple, bloody, gory, sloppy, slimy, fun, and nothing more. Robert Englund is good for the first time in years, the kid playing Jack Brooks (Trevor Matthews) is solid in the lead as well.
The effects are comically bad, but the badness, strangely sort of works because of the overall tone. Despite the fun, this isn't a perfect film. It takes a VERY long time to get rolling and there's a big stretch of nearly un-watchable boredom early on.
The jokes, while chuckle-worthy could have been funnier as well. If you're looking for something fun and meaningless, that will leave you drooling and giggling at the screen like a mental patient immediately after a two hour shock treatment session then give "Jack Brooks" a look.
If you're looking for a film that will challenge your ideas on humanity, bring you to tears, and touch your soul, my guess is that this one isn't for you. Mild recommendation from me.
