Review of Jabberwocky (1977) by Justin H — 05 Apr 2010
When I first stumbled across this, I thought to myself: "Hey, a Terry Gilliam movie I haven't seen yet. Cool!" And then I watched it. The main failing of "Jabberwocky" is that it never feels grounded.
What story there is just meanders from place to place, never really sticking with one idea long enough to make it interesting. Not helping matters is the fact that the comedy is nowhere near the level found in Gilliam's other films.
There are a few lines that work really well, and the occasional scene that elicits a chuckle, but by and large, "Jabberwocky" just isn't outlandish enough...and yet the acting is usually too over the top for its own good.
It's a weird combination of things that don't work on their own, and work even less well together. Still, this isn't an awful movie, but it's so lackluster compared to Gilliam's other work that I couldn't ever see myself recommending it.
