Review of Jabberwocky (1977) by Ryan V — 16 Feb 2012
This dank, silly movie is Terry Gilliam's first film project outside of the Monty Python crew. However, the medieval setting, comedic style, and presence of Michael Palin all but force the viewer to compare Jabberwocky to Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
And, aside from a well-directed sequence where Palin fights a creatively puppeted form of the Jabberwock, this film does not hold up well against its better known predecessor. The lighting is poor, the pacing is odd, the sound quality is dubious, and for the most part this movie feels like something made by a man who hasn't quite figured out what he's doing just yet.
