Review of Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008) by Jaya H — 27 Jul 2008
Refreshing is a word I often use. You might have heard the phrase "old wine in a new bottle" when someone is criticizing a film. 'Jaane tu ya jaane na' is one of those old exclusive wines that is so refreshing when you take a sip.
The debutant director proves that a story that has been told ample of times before can be told again from another point view with a much polished execution. What works most here is characterization. The two girls, Aditi (Genelia Desouz) and Megna (Manjari Fadnis) are fantastic.
I couldn't decide which one to fall in love with. The music by AR Rehman is very refreshing and is on my ipod and car all the time these days. Throughout the whole film you hear Rehmans jazzy 'tu bole mein boloon' (a song that is my current favourite) and 'pappu can't dance' rocks.
Newcomer Imran does have some work to do but his flaws are filled by excellent actors surrounding him. Paresh Rawal, Ratna Shah and Nassiruddin Shah do a great job. The Khan brothers (minus Salman) are hilarious.
In one scene Meow (that's Aditi's nickname in the movie) sees the Khan brothers ride to a night club on horses wearing cowboy hats and she says "I love Bombay, you never know what you're going see here".
The dialogues are fantastic and every scene seems refreshing. The climax is very 'filmi' but Aditi's (Genelia) smile does wonders.
