Review of J. Edgar (2011) by E F — 18 Apr 2012
Only knowing two things about J. Edgar Hoover before - that he was a cross-dresser and had something to do with the FBI - I found this film to be very informative, even if the homosexuality and cross-dressing rumors surrounding J.
Edgar were somewhat portrayed as fact. But come on, the guy was 43, living with his mother, never married, had lunch and dinner every day and vacationed frequently with his assistant Clyde Tolson with the two staying in adjoining rooms, and those are facts.
As far as his accomplishments, I hadn't realized J. Edgar Hoover basically created the FBI as we know it today, headed it for 48 years, nor did I know about how he got presidents and congress to give the FBI its powers by threatening to blackmail them with embarrassing information on many of them that he kept in secret files.
The three main actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, and Armie Hammer, are outstanding in their roles.
