Review of Dossier 51 (1978) by Mereie D — 11 Jul 2012
Well, this film may be well-appreciated by many (IMDb rating: 6.8; the DVD insert mentions nominations for acclaimed film prizes), but it didn't quite agree with me. I admit, again, that my French isn't good enough to fully grasp matters, but even so the film seems unusual in the wrong sort of way.
To put it plainly, I found it too boring. The scenario is interesting enough, and so are the subjective camera techniques (often hand-held), but that doesn't justify scenes that take far too long to hold the viewer's concentration.
This film is like a dramatized documentary of which the dramatization didn't pass the mark (some of the dialogue could have done with some studio dubbing). Films can get away with being bumpy rides, but not ultra-slow rides that lull you into sleep.
