Review of I've Loved You So Long (2008) by Morten E — 17 Feb 2010
Let's get quickly past the bad points: the 'twist' at the end is obvious from around thirty seconds after the reason for Juliette's extended period in prison is revealed. The way in which Juliette's policeman friend exits the story is a shock and incredibly poorly written into the plot.
However, KST is just sublime. She plays that worn down, anguished, issue-ridden character so well and the French language and chain-smoking only add to the depth that she gives Juliette. Juliette's sister is equally believable and her older daughter is adorable.
A final niggle for me; if you hire this on DVD and watch the interview with the director on the extras, you'll see that he is an egotistical knob and it may ruin the film somewhat for you. (It did for me anyway; maybe for film/art lovers/students it'd be different...).
