Review of I've Loved You So Long (2008) by Ld P — 29 Sep 2009
I've Loved You So Long (2008) Il y a longtemps que je t'aime. Kirsten Thomas became famous with the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and The English Patient. This film could be her best role yet.
She plays a woman fresh out of prision who rejoins her family and lives with here sister in Lorraine France. They had been apart for 15 years and their father had convinced the other daughter to forget her sibling in prison that she did not exist.
She was (and still is ) ostracized because she committed murder of her own son. Sorry to give this spoiler. The film's essential mystery - is the question of what led Juliette to commit murder in the first place? The answers are handed out delicately and slowly, for maximum impact.
Kristen Thomas has the role of a lifetime in this psychological character study. This is a spare drama about love, loss, shame and redemption. This film won the 2009 BAFTA best foreign film. She was nominated for several best acting awards but did not win.
She should have won this is certainly one of the best films of 2008. highly recommended four stars.
