Review of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) by Peter E — 06 Oct 2012
(4 Stars) You know what? I hate Lucy. She says the meanest things in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and her only comeuppance is when Snoopy kisses her during bobbing for apples. SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE ROCKS FOR TRICKS-OR-TREATS! That being said, I love the low budget and warmly-made feel of the Peanuts holiday specials; something about its simplicity is surreal, artistic, and touching.
This Halloween special has many classic moments like Charlie Brown getting rocks, the long wait for the great pumpkin, and everyone's favorite beagle Snoopy imagining he is behind enemy lines as a World War I ace.
I also love the look of the film, which is beautiful and feels very autumn, visually setting it apart from the other Peanuts specials. You should definitely watch It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown once a year in October.
