Review of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) by Matthew D — 25 Oct 2018
A Fall season childhood classic.
Charlie Brown in the Peanuts cartoons can be hit or miss, but It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) is perhaps the greatest little short animated film the Peanuts series ever produced.
It is super short and sweet. You never get tired of this little cartoon. It's only 25 minutes long and still feels fun. The voice acting is so charming as its real children voicing the characters. Peanuts were the first cartoon to use kids as the voices for realism. I think it works well and sounds natural.
Charlie Brown has cute memorable characters that represent character types. The satirical aspect in the writing is great. I forgot how thoughtful and sincere the Peanuts cartoons were written. From Linus attempting to make his dream come true with sincerity to Snoopy's WWI adventure in the middle, The Great Pumpkin comes to life in our mind.
The animation is certainly old, but it is hand drawn classic artwork. The colors look so vibrant and the jazz score still brings me nostalgia.
If you are at home sick or just want a quaint, quick watch during Fall or Halloween time, I highly recommend putting It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on for a bit.
