Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Mika M — 30 Apr 2011
I have nothing but contempt for this movie, because it has nothing but contempt for people suffering from mental disorders, particularly depression. So the depressed "loser" kid from the "smart school" finds he can be a king of the psych ward (aka "Cool Craig"; reminds me of the Family Guy joke about being "a dwarf among midgets") and in the process seduces the most attractive cutter in NYC (how fortunate that the teenage minor coeds are kept in the same ward with the adult male schizophrenics); I suppose the sequel will explore how joyful a relationship forged in the "neurosciences department" with a person practicing facial cutting (!!!) is.
.. Not only that, news of this boys illness suddenly makes him the most popular kid at school, instantly making his crush of 2 years break up with his best friend and come try to have sex with him (in the hospital while visiting, no less.
..). This is nothing but adolescent fantasy drivel, the notion that suicidal angst is "hot" and succumbing to mental illness makes women froth at the mouth...I'd love to see this sexist slop reshot with a chubby geek girl instead of a scrawny geek boy as lead, would she still become the most popular girl at school and an instant boy magnet? Trash, absolute trash.
..
