Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Jiana W — 18 Oct 2011
I kind of like Keir Gilchrist, probably because I liked him on "United States of Tara". He's got that sad, everyman teen look about him so he was a convincing lead here. He plays Craig, a suicidal high school student who checks himself into a mental hospital where he learns some important lessons about life, what's important, and women. Zach Galifianakis is actually surprisingly good in his semi-dramatic role as Bobby, a patient who takes Craig under his proverbial wing. The messages about finding out what's important and whatnot can be a little heavy-handed at times. That aside, I liked the sequences where we get to explore Craig's active imagination. It gives us an insight into what kind of creative person he is.
Zoe Kravitz is popping up in a lot of things I've watched recently. Not sure how I feel about this just yet. Stay tuned.
Overall, it's a good movie, I'd say. I'm probably just biased because I've always been strangely intrigued by movies that take place in mental institutions. There's probably something wrong with me, but it's true. Granted it's no "Girl, Interrupted" but it's worth a watch at least.
