Review of It's Always Fair Weather (1955) by Ricardo O — 21 Feb 2011
It's only natural that after having made On the Town and Singin' In the Rain together, Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly's eventual follow-up It's Always Fair Weather would seem like a bit of a disappointment.
It has it's flaws, mostly in the narrative and how it drags a bit during the 2nd act, but it's still quite entertaining during different sections of the film. Like Singin' In the Rain, Fair Weather also has it's own bit of a satire, this time on the television and advertising world.
It's hardly great but it's still light-hearted entertainment worth watching. The scene with Gene Kelly dancing around on the sidewalk in roller blades is probably the single most memorable part of the film.
The televised finale is another scene that is also quite entertaining. This was the third and final time Donen & Kelly would take the helm of a film together and they would both go on to bigger and better projects on their own but it would have been nice to see what else they would have done after this film.
It's certainly not a great movie but it has its enjoyable moments. 8/10.
