Review of It Happened One Night (1958) by Chris D — 16 Oct 2010
A well done rom-com from the early sound era with a very well developed story, and some genuinely funny moments. I wasn't enthralled with the main characters at times, however: I felt like Gable's character was oftentimes mean-spirit and even cruel.
Example, convincing one traveler that he was kidnapping the woman and that if he didn't keep his mouth shut he would do something to his children that would cause him to kill himself when he found out about it.
Apparently this was suppose to be a joke, but I was sickened by its implications. Despite its also dated attitudes on woman (I think Gable called Colbert's character stupid far too often), it's a strong film for its time.
