Review of It Happened One Night (1934) by Alx W — 06 Aug 2009
A lovely film. There is greatness on every front. The two leads are amazing, the direction is very good, and the screenplay is fantastic. It's no surprise that this is one of three films to win an Oscar grand slam.
I found the film to be very clever, and both funny and moving, and still resonates to this day. The last act was hard to bear, but only because I liked the characters so much, and I didn't like seeing them suffer.
My only big problem is with the very end. After all this buildup, we never get to see them together again. And the last shot is rather silly, but it works, in a 30s kind of way. In short, this is one of the best, if not the best, romantic comedy I have ever seen (although I haven't seen that many), and is truly a timeless classic.
