Review of It Follows (2015) by Zack L — 30 Sep 2015
Not so much a terrifying horror experience as it is an endeavour into the world of suspense, It Follows really surprised me. How, you ask? By being a 2015 horror movie that is ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD. This is a quiet movie, with periods of intense swelling of suspense. Don't expect a high-octane chase film. This creature walks. But it doesn't stop. The tone of the movie mimics the relentless nature of the creature. This movie really pays homage to the horror films of the 80's, the most overt of these elements being the electro-sounding soundtrack.
As a film nerd, I had a field day with some of the BEAUTIFUL shots and camerawork in this movie. The cinematography was so elegant in a very cinematic way, with stunning wide shots littered throughout the movie. The acting was also really surprisingly good, particularly the protagonist, played by certified 'Scream Queen' Maika Monroe. Overall, this movie is a relentless suspense ride, made with meticulous care to direction and cinematography that plays with the genre whilst also tributing it.
