Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Ginak — 13 Jun 2017
Yes, this is a character-driven horror film, and I think it is interesting to both horror fans like myself for its tension and "scares" and to people who like serious films too. And perhaps my take on it is slightly more psychological than most.
To me this is a film about two families in which the parents are so busy being wary of each other and trying desperately to survive in a terrible situation that they never realize that the real danger to their survival is not external, but their ignorance of the deep trauma suffered by their children.
The film begins with the horrible, if necessary, death of the first family’s “infected” grandfather, and his grandson never gets over this trauma and restlessly walks the house’s attic at night, spying on the second family that enters the film later on.
But none of the parents realize the emotional turmoil in their children, which eventually causes the final horror in the film, precipitated by the loss of the family pet, a terrible trauma for children even in normal circumstances.
