Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Sara D — 21 Sep 2017
This movie has gotten a bad reputation due to how disappointed audiences were -- but it's the same issue as with 2016's "The Witch": People want monster movies with cheap jump scares and cookie-cutter plots. I enjoyed "The Witch" because it was creepy and chilling in a different, thought-provoking way. It took me a little longer to appreciate "It Comes At Night" but I do like the movie quite a bit now.
Let's cut to the chase: There is no monster or monsters, nor does the disease in the film turn people into zombis. This isn't that kind of movie, despite what the trailers and posters lead you to believe. If that is absolutely a no-go for you -- as in, you need gore and creatures in order to enjoy a horror film -- then this movie isn't for you.
"It Comes At Night" is a movie that focuses on fear and how it affects people, and the movie's attention to detail is amazing. You have to pay attention so you can get the whole picture, so to speak. This movie will make you think and will probably lead you to come to your own conclusions about certain events.
The acting is superb, as is the music and cinematography. A lot of the movie takes place in a bordered up house, and, at night, you can feel the sense of isolation and fear in the barely-lit rooms.
Definitely give this movie a try if you want something different from the horror genre, and aren't afraid to be challenged by what you see.
