I have never read the book, but I would hope its infinitely better than this 2.5 hour waste of my time. It's a classic nonsensical scary movie. The characters react in unreasonable ways and the monster is never fully explained.

If you like jump scares with no content this is the movie for you. After over two hours of following the kids chasing a ghost clown around without a plan, the movie ends without the audience knowing if the clown is dead or not.

I like movies to make sense as well as entertain, this movie did not reach those benchmarks.
