It is like E.T. meets The Shining: Eighties kids on bikes having a paranormal adventure, and lots of blood. It was exciting and scary. (I had a nightmare afterwards of Pennywise taking the form of a horrible former boss.).

The CGI was a little cartoonish at times, though, which is why I think the practical effects of The Shining make for a better film, and the last act felt a little long as they tried to wrap up too many loose ends in the plot. And as someone who would be only a few years younger than the kids depicted in the film, I didn't think the depiction of '80s childhood was totally authentic. Certainly we rode our bikes all over the place, with our parents only vaguely knowing where we were at all times, but we wouldn't have jumped into a quarry in our underwear (we did have swimming trunks in those days), and a girl certainly wouldn't have joined us, or stripped to her underwear even if she did.

As for the plot, Pennywise is thankfully not over-explained, which keeps him scary. Too many horror films try to make the monster plausible. We never learn where he came from. He might be a demon who takes tangible form as something creepy. It's a good adventure/coming-of-age/horror film with enough scary and original ideas and visuals.
