Review of It (2017) by Facebook U — 15 Jan 2018
A thoroughly ScArY movie, with enough character development and laughs to (mostly) make up for the abundance of modern horror cliches. I'd easily watch it again, and I look forward to the sequel. But I do wish it had more of a spookiness to it.
By that I mean that, despite how often the set piece scenes managed to be horrifying, the film never feels like it has an ambient spookiness. The 1990 miniseries was spooky, because there was a unique score and an overhanging dread to it.
But this one never feels like it exists outside of the scenes we see. The world seems to stop living as soon as the shots cut. And the music didn't have much of a personality of its own, which was quite disappointing.
What this one does well is manage to terrify. But only in short bursts.
