Review of It (2017) by Jon S — 15 Jan 2018
The story is reasonably compelling and the visuals are interesting in a way that's more creepy than frightening. The acting is mostly good, although some of the dialogue fell flat. The main character has a stutter that's inauthentic and annoying. The camaraderie among the child protagonists felt unearned. There's a set piece involving three local bullies that made me laugh because it was so absurd. Props and design are temporally all over the place, with a distracting mix of elements from the 1960s through the 1980s. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching a big-budget, less-well-executed version of Stranger Things.
IT was ultimately a decent and reasonably entertaining film that was prevented from being really good or even great by an accumulation of small flaws.
