IT (2017) was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, setting the record for most-watched trailer on YouTube. The modern re-adaptation of Stephen King's famous novel IT had audiences excited to be scared by the ghoulish clown, Pennywise. The clown is haunting the children of small town Derry, Maine. However, IT was one of the most disappointing movies in decades and wasn't the terrifying remake viewers had been promised. Much like recent horror movies, IT relied heavily on special effects and jump scares, which make an audience uninterested quickly. Ultimately, the story, character development, and creepiness of the source material were squandered.

The contemporary IT cuts corners wherever possible, achieving the bare minimum to fill seats and give a cheap fright. Today the 80's and 90's are making a comeback, and film studios are taking advantage of this by releasing remakes of old classics. Audiences were promised a modern adaptation of the cult-classic IT, with high expectations and overmarketing hype. Unfortunately, the modern adaptation did not deliver the terrifying remastering it had teased. Instead, viewers sat down to a barebones retelling lacking soul and charm. Overall, the film was a lazy disappointment and failed to deliver the least bit of fright. On the other hand, the film does deserve an award, which should go to the savvy marketing and overhyped advertising.
