Review of It (2017) by Terry M — 19 Oct 2018
I, finally, got around to watching the remake of IT. I always thought the tv version was awful. Let's face it most Stephen King film adaptations are truly awful.
I really liked this version, which is just the first half of the book. The cast of kids are terrific, especially Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh and Bill Skarsgatd's Pennywise is fantastic.
The film does a wonderful job of making you care about this loveable ragtag group of outsiders. The film seems to be about the gradual loss of innocence, the horrors of growing up an outsider and, for some of these young teenage kids, the terror our parents can be when we are children. (In addition to battling IT).
The film has flaws and is a little overlong but overall this is a beautifully made adaptation of the first half of Stephen King's novel. The movie also handles its late 80's nostalgia in a tone that is just right.
The film is not as good as Frank Darabont's truly wonderful film adaptation of Stephen King's THE MIST, but unlike most of the disastrous film adaptation of King novels .. this one succeeds pretty well.
And obviously there will be a sequel or rather the second half of the book will be made into a movie.
I was very entertained and sometimes very moved by the beautiful work done by this ensemble of very fine young actors.
