Review of It (2017) by Christine A — 02 Jul 2018
Unlike the best adaptations of Stephen King, this one seems rushed to cram as much action in A by the book script. A band of misfit kids band together to fight a mysterious evil living in the sewer who is abducting tons of adults and kids in a small New England town.
I was hoping the movie would pay off why the adults didn't seem the least bit curious about all the people disappearing. But no! The adults are mostly a-holes who don't seem to care about anything besides scolding/abusing their kids.
Meanwhile, the kids keep contradicting themselves and their motivations-all while facing their fears in a time-honored fashion. Unfortunately, the monster backs off at convenient moments because I wouldn't have minded if he ate a few of the whiny kids.
kudos to the kid actors who elevate the material. I hope they move on to better things. I kept comparing it to Stranger Things, which is better by far. The characters in this movie are one dimensional; their actions don't make sense; and the villain lacks consistency.
(ANd it's not scary!!) Be warned, the movie leaves out critical plot points from the book.
