Review of Isle of Dogs (2018) by Chris K — 25 Mar 2018
Director Wes Anderson's latest is a delightful film that'll make you laugh and cry, then laugh again. Produced with gorgeous stop motion animation Isle of Dogs is a feast for the senses. Edits and cuts, scene changes, composition, coloring, and framing are all deliberately chosen to create a beautiful oriental adventure with man's best friend.
The voice talent on display is also top-shelf stuff and seemingly endless. Cranston, Norton, Schreiber, Murray, Johannsen, Goldblum, Murray Abraham - the list goes on and on, and so much of the talent is used to produce witty, rapid-fire jokes and expertly paced character development.
Desplat's score deviates from his lush, melodic norm to deliver an aggressive and traditional Japanese musical score, while also delivering those classic moments with untraditional instrumentation.
It may be Anderson at his most self-indulgent, but this is what I love about his films. Every time a Wes Anderson film comes out I look forward to seeing how he takes a long standing, traditional medium and puts his own spin on nearly everything, from camera work to storytelling.
He takes film and molds it to fit his unique style and quirks, and it's always a treat to witness. Isle of Dogs is a wonderful and artful film that still proves Wes Anderson's one of the most creative directors out there.
